Fixed vs. Variable Energy Rates: Which Is Better?

Quick answer

A fixed rate locks in the same price per kWh for the length of your contract, protecting you from price spikes but not letting you benefit if market prices drop; a variable rate moves month to month with the market, which can mean savings or surprise increases.

How a fixed rate works

With a fixed-rate contract, you agree to a set price per kWh for a defined term (commonly 6–36 months). Your rate doesn’t change during that term regardless of what happens to wholesale energy prices, which makes budgeting predictable and protects you from a sudden spike — the tradeoff is that if market prices fall, you keep paying your locked-in rate until the contract ends.

How a variable rate works

A variable-rate plan adjusts periodically (often monthly) based on wholesale market conditions and the supplier’s own pricing formula. This can work in your favor during periods of falling prices, but it also means your bill can rise without warning during high-demand periods — and variable rates are also the type most likely to include a steep increase after an initial promotional period ends.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch from variable to fixed mid-contract?

It depends on your supplier and contract terms — some allow it, some charge an early termination fee, and some simply let the contract run to its end date before you switch. Check your specific agreement.

Do fixed rates ever change?

Not during the locked term itself, but they will change if you renew after the contract ends — many contracts silently roll onto a much higher variable "month-to-month" rate if you don’t actively renew or switch.

Is a fixed rate always cheaper than utility default supply?

Not necessarily — it depends on current market conditions and the specific offer. Comparing the actual $/kWh rate against your utility’s current default supply rate is the only reliable way to know.
